Engineering

Prepare a robotics bearing or linkage enquiry with clear interfaces, movement, load cases, clearance targets and installation conditions. The same checks also support industrial bearing applications.

Define the requirements of a robotic joint

For a humanoid hand, wrist, leg or other moving connection, identify the joint location and show how the bearing or linkage fits into the assembly. Start with a listed robotics series where its geometry is relevant; use a drawing-defined enquiry when the required interfaces or assembly differ.

Clearance and starting torque

State whether the target concerns bearing internal clearance, assembled joint play or linkage backlash, and describe how it will be measured. Provide the force or torque, direction, temperature and assembly condition used for the check.

Review clearance and starting torque together. A tighter joint can change the force needed to start movement; neither a low-play description nor a catalogue designation establishes a numerical target.

Linkage geometry and acceptance

Provide End A and End B interfaces, centre distance, adjustment range, locking method and movement envelope. Identify thread size, pitch and hand independently from the bearing bore.

For prototypes, list the drawing revision, sample quantity, inspection points and proposed movement or durability test. Agree acceptance criteria before treating a sample as a production-approved assembly.

Read the drawing before comparing dimensions

Identify each measurement by name and unit. Use the symbols on the drawing for the exact series; do not assume a symbol has the same meaning in every supplier document. Keep measured sample dimensions separate from nominal drawing dimensions.

Product / dimensionWhat to recordWhat else to check
Spherical plain bearingBore d, outside diameter D, inner ring width B and outer ring width C where those symbols are used.Source drawing, units, tolerances, chamfers, shoulders and the available tilt or misalignment space.
Rod end bearingBearing bore and width, full thread callout, male or female connection, thread hand and centre distance.Pitch, thread engagement, housing envelope, adjustment and locking arrangement. Bore size and thread size are separate dimensions.
Plain or flanged bushingInside diameter, outside diameter, length, and flange diameter and thickness if present.Shaft and housing requirements, fits, mating surfaces and lubrication provisions.
Linkage or custom assemblyEnd A and End B interfaces, required centres, fixed dimensions and drawing revision.Adjustment range, assembly sequence, surrounding clearances and the movement envelope.

Describe movement and loading separately

Movement

State whether the joint oscillates, rotates continuously or mainly accommodates alignment changes. Give the range, speed or cycle frequency, and duty cycle where known.

Distinguish the operating movement from the tilt or misalignment needed to fit the assembly.

Load direction

Radial load acts perpendicular to the bore axis; axial load acts along it. If both occur, describe their directions and whether they occur together.

A simple assembly sketch can show the force direction more clearly than a machine description alone.

Load history

Separate normal working loads from peaks, reversals and shocks. State units, the source of the values and any assumptions used.

Catalogue static and dynamic ratings are different quantities. Do not treat a listed rating as an application-specific allowable working load.

Include maintenance and installation constraints

Sliding pair
Keep steel/steel, bronze and PTFE-based constructions distinct. Confirm the exact material and liner from the model-specific documentation.
Lubrication
Describe maintenance access and the intended schedule. Follow the instructions for the specified construction; do not transfer a lubrication practice from one sliding pair to another.
Environment
Provide operating temperature, moisture, dust, chemicals or cleaning exposure, and any corrosion or sealing requirements.
Installation
Supply the shaft, housing or connection drawing, including fits, shoulders, locking details and available assembly space. Request the relevant installation instructions for the chosen item.

Check the complete bearing, liner, seal and housing arrangement when reviewing temperature, movement or maintenance limits.

Prepare a technical enquiry

An existing part

Keep the complete designation and manufacturer. Add photographs, the source drawing or datasheet, and a description of what you want to retain or improve.

Review scope and supporting documents

Model-specific suitability, allowable loads, service life, fits and tolerances require the applicable product data and engineering review. State the document and revision used for each requirement. A catalogue comparison does not replace your assembly approval process.

The website form does not accept attachments. Email drawings to [email protected] using the same part or project reference, and discuss confidentiality arrangements before sending restricted files.
